Canada is surrounded on three sides by oceans.
To the north, the Arctic Ocean borders Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
Off the west coast of British Columbia is the Pacific Ocean.
The Atlantic Ocean, meanwhile, sits to the east of Canada’s Maritime provinces, which include Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

Hi Mom and Dad,
I’m happy to report that I have arrived safely in Mozambique. After an exhausting flight, I was met at the airport by the volunteer coordinator for Global Habitat Organization, who drove me to the village of Nahino, where the school-building project that I’m working on is taking place.
You wouldn’t believe the weather here. Last week was so hot that a few of the other volunteers became ill. Our supervisor said that this heat wave was really extreme and that he was not surprised to see some people were affected by it. Apparently, the weather is back to normal now, but it still feels pretty hot and humid to me.
Despite the hot weather, we’ve made impressive progress. The frame of the school is completed, and we’ll start on the roof next week. This organization has extensive experience getting volunteers and local people to work together efficiently, and, while most of us are completely untrained when it comes to building, we’re all willing to learn and to work hard. The local construction workers know all about the best types of structures and materials to use in this climate. I’m learning a lot about how their ventilation systems work.
We’re confident that the school will be open by September. Sixty students from the village have already enrolled, and two full-time teachers have been hired. It’s so exciting to see the kids who will be attending the school come by almost every day to watch our progress and help in any way they can. It’s fantastic to be working on a project that will help so many people, and I’m already thinking of volunteering for another project next summer.
Yesterday, we took a break from the project and went into the city for some entertainment. We sampled the local cuisine at a restaurant, and, afterwards, we went dancing, so I had an opportunity to meet some local people and get to know some of the other volunteers better. Bill and Katie have become two of my friends here, and we’re planning a short excursion to see more of this fabulous country before returning home. After this experience, we’re all somewhat reluctant to return to our dull classes in the fall.

A. Two worldwide youth organizations that have been popular in Canada for more than a century are Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. Scouting groups started up in Ontario and Nova Scotia shortly after Lord Baden Powell founded the Boy Scouts Association in England in 1907. Around the same time, the Canadian Girl Guides Company began in Ontario. Both groups organize sports, games, and outdoor activities, such as camping, in order to promote the emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing of youths. Both attract enthusiastic leaders, usually former Guides or Scouts themselves.
B. Scouts and Guides have similar organizational structures and goals. They serve children and young adults within the ages of 5 to 17 in five separate age groups. No evaluation or criteria other than age affects moving from one group to another. Whereas Guides attracts ages 7 to 11, Scouts is popular with ages 5 to 10. By the teenage years, interest wanes significantly. Since 1992, all sections of Scouts have been coed, whereas Guides continues to be exclusively girls. Guides enrolments didn’t suffer from Scouts broadening their market; however, Scouts experienced criticism for including girls.
C. Membership was brisk through much of the twentieth century, although it has declined significantly in recent years. In Canada, Girl Guides experienced a membership decline of more than 50% by 2012. Scouts Canada reached its peak in 1965 with 285,000 members but has since decreased by 70%. Why were these programs so interesting to youths in the past? For many it was a way to make friends, have fun, and enjoy the outdoors. It was camping and ghost stories, earning badges, attending national and international jamborees, and wearing a uniform that identified you as one of the group. The youths of the twenty-first century are more interested in internet-based activities. Both Guides and Scouts are now trying to adapt to the interests of today’s youth.
D. Most of the Scouts and Guides groups are run by dedicated adults who go through an interview, reference check, and police check, followed by a training program. It’s not an easy volunteer job, requiring the planning of weekly meetings, organizing camping trips, managing young personalities, and attending periodic training weekends. In the past, parents were often the leaders, but nowadays they are too busy balancing jobs, chores, and their children’s sports or music events. It remains to be seen whether these two immensely popular youth organizations of the twentieth century will endure through the twenty-first.

Account aggregators are apps that let you see and track all your savings and expenditures together in one place. One example is Florida-based Wealth.com, which collects a whopping 7 years’ worth of transactions from your bank accounts, credit cards, and investments and serves it up in tantalizing pie charts.
“Wealth.com lets me analyze my spending patterns,” says customer Adrienne Hyslop. “It showed me how much I was spending on lattes and banking fees. It helped me stick to a budget, be thrifty, and save for my kids’ college education.”
But finance columnist Elsa Balka counsels caution. “Read your banking contract,” she says. “Using an aggregator involves disclosing your client number and password to a third party. That puts you in default of your online banking agreement. By voluntarily sharing this data with a party other than the bank, you void the bank’s guarantee that it will insure your investments against any possible fraudulent use.” Ms. Balka adds that account aggregators are typically US companies, storing your data across the border where it’s not subject to Canadian laws.
Consumer ombudsman Laurelei Reynolds has investigated the convenient “in-house” aggregators provided by the big banks themselves, such as Hexagon Bank’s quick-and-easy MoneyViewer app, integrated into the financial giant’s online banking platform. Customers who click the MoneyViewer link automatically launch an aggregator whose use is covered by a separate section of the online banking contract. There, Reynolds finds complex stipulations that compromise the consumer’s legal right to compensation if data or identity theft occurs. “Yes, MoneyViewer is bank-friendly, not ‘third-party,’” she concedes. “Still, bear in mind, if a consumer must breach her contract in order to use the product or service that the contract promises to provide, then the contract is unfair.”
That’s welcome news to Roald Weiss, CEO of Wealth.com. “Our security protocols are state-of-the-art,” Weiss says. “We use the same encryption techniques as the army. The real reason the big banks don’t want you using our product is that we reveal their hidden fees. We show you what they’re actually charging.”
