Read the text below. The Falkland Islands consists of two main islands, West Falkland and East Falkland, and about 776 smaller islands. The islands are predominantly mountainous and hilly, with the major exception being the depressed plains of Lafonia. The Falklands consists of continental crust fragments resulting from the break-up of Gondwana. The islands are located in the South Atlantic Ocean, on the Patagonian Shelf, about 300 miles east of Patagonia in southern Argentina.

Thanks buddy, you saved my day! Had you not been there, I would have been in a big soup right now. It was our 1st anniversary and how imbecile of me to forget about confirming the package. I must tell you that your planning was simply amazing; yeah, don’t smug and give me that ’I told you so’ look.

Anyway, here’s the sneak-peak into our trip. In just two days, I think we were both hooked to Freeport and its beauty. We enjoyed the exotic beaches, dense forests and bonfire during the first day and celebrated our anniversary on the beach with the fellow travellers.

Next day was a surprise to both of us as you forgot to mention that we had to go on snorkelling. I was scared out of wits! You know all about my water phobia. However, Amy was super-excited and I had to act as if I knew all about snorkelling. I literally had to search the web, go through the YouTube videos and even call our cousin to be well-informed and I had to do all that stealthily.

We were supposed to go to a little island and snorkel around the reef off the island, but the winds were not ambient for that. So we went for kayaking on a lake with mangroves. Frankly, I had a sigh of relief. However, it was short lived because the locations were switched later. Ultimately shunning the fears, we explored the Blue Hole. We hardly saw anything at first as there were many rocks with mini caves and crevices. Hidden within these little crevices were fish. I had only seen such colourful fish on TV, or in aquariums, but nothing beats seeing these creatures up close and in person. We saw a curious little fairy Basslet. It would hide behind a rock, pop out again, then swim back to the safety of his rock and out again. We even wiggled with the little-spotted Goatfish and watched the Atlantic Blue Tang in all its majesty. Thereafter, we went to Paradise Cove for deep-water snorkelling and ended the day on-board a Kayak which was quite relaxing and rejuvenating. There we got some mesmerizing sunset clicks.

It was an exhilarating and thrilling experience enjoying the natural beauty. However, what I am more concerned about right now is the scuba diving that you have roped us in for the next two days. I hardly have any idea about these. I don’t want to spoil Amy’s mood. So, give me all the details that you have got on this activity.

A. The Inuit, (meaning ’the people’ in the Inuktitut language), are a group of culturally similar indigenous people inhabiting the Arctic regions of Greenland, Canada, and Alaska. In Canada and the States, the term ’Eskimo’ was commonly used by ethnic Europeans to describe the Inuit, and Siberia’s and Alaska’s Yupik and Iñupiat people. However, ’Inuit’ is not accepted as a term for the Yupik, and ’Eskimo’ is the only term that applies to Yupik, Iñupiat and Inuit. Since the late 20th century, indigenous peoples in Canada and Greenlandic Inuit consider ’Eskimo’ to be a pejorative (offensive) term, and they more frequently identify ’Inuit’ for an antonym.

B. The Inuit live throughout most of Northern Canada in the territory of Nunavut, Nunavik in the northern third of Quebec, Nunatsiavut and NunatuKavut in Labrador, and in various parts of the Northwest Territories, particularly around the Arctic Ocean. These areas are known in the Inuktitut language as the ’Inuit Nunangat’. In the United States, the Iñupiat live primarily on the Alaska North Slope and on Little Diomede Island.

C. The Inuit have traditionally been fishers and hunters. They still hunt whales, walrus, caribou, seal, polar bears, muskoxen, birds, and fish and at times other less commonly eaten animals such as the Arctic fox. While it is not possible to cultivate plants for food in the Arctic, the Inuit have traditionally gathered those that are naturally available. Grasses, tubers, roots, stems, berries, and seaweed are collected and preserved depending on the season and the location. The typical Inuit diet is high in protein and very high in fat – in their traditional diets, Inuit consumed an average of 75% of their daily energy intake from fat.

D. In the 1920s, anthropologist Vilhjalmur Stefansson lived with and studied a group of Inuit. The study focused on the fact that the Inuit’s low-carbohydrate diet had no adverse effects on their health, nor indeed, Stefansson’s own health. Stefansson also observed that the Inuit were able to get the necessary vitamins they needed from their traditional winter diet, which did not contain any plant matter. In particular, he found that adequate vitamin C could be obtained from items in their traditional diet of raw meat such as ringed seal liver and whale skin. While there was considerable scepticism when he reported these findings, they have been borne out in recent studies and analyses. However, the Inuit have lifespans 12 to 15 years shorter than the average Canadians, which is thought to be a result of limited access to medical services.

Willis Zhou had a rough transition to high school: The work was hard and the environment uninspiring. His grades took a nosedive. ’I just didn’t apply myself in class – if I was in class.’ So while he didn’t like his parents’ suggestion of a private tutor, he didn’t have much room to refuse. Now he is preparing to graduate and deciding between pursuing higher education in business or cooking. He goes to a tutor four days a week, for as much as four hours at a time.

Zhou is one of a growing number of Toronto teens whose parents are turning to private tutors to supplement a public education they feel isn’t up to the task. For parents, they realize that there’s one teacher for 30 children, and they may seek extracurricular tutoring to complement their in-school learning. The rates of Toronto students reporting they’re helped by private tutors have grown by 60% over the last five years, Toronto school board data shows. This industry is experiencing an unprecedented boom.

’It’s on the rise,’ says Andie McGeachie of Sylvan Learning, a tutoring chain with 11 locations in the GTA. In some cases, McGeachie said, a school will tell parents of students in need of extra help to seek it out through paid tutors – the board doesn’t have those supports. The boom could be due in part to the area’s demographics – many new Canadians with small financial means but big academic dreams for their children. ’They expect the children to do well, so the minute they see that there are Cs on the report card, that’s when they realize the warning signs go up – that they need the help,’ said Dhani who runs Agincourt Learning. But, he added, it’s also fuelled by a dissatisfaction with what the public system has to offer.’The system is actually falling apart; that’s the reason there’s an increase in these things’.

Nonetheless, Education Minister Liz Sandals says the province’s schools are ’doing a good job,’ and that tutors can’t take credit for student achievement. ’The private tutoring companies have been around for a long time,’ she said in an interview. ’I think that what we’re seeing is that the schools are doing a good job, and that we see continuous improvement over the years, and that the results are trending up. I reject the idea that tutors are what’s making the difference. Schools are making the difference, in all sorts of neighbourhoods.’ Even Toronto school board senior superintendent Christopher Usih said, ’While we recognize that students in more affluent neighbourhoods may have access to some of those extra supports, we want to make sure that none of our students is put at a disadvantage by virtue of their economic situation.’
